Age Calculator
The way age is calculated varies across cultures, shaped by traditions and historical norms. This calculator follows the most widely recognized age system, where a person’s age increases on their birthday. For instance, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is still considered 3 years old. However, when their next birthday arrives in one month, they will turn 4. This system is prevalent in most Western countries.
Conversely, some cultures approach age differently, either including or excluding the current year in their count. For example, a person stated to be 20 years old may be understood as being in their 21st year of life. In a traditional Chinese age system, a newborn starts at age 1 instead of 0, and rather than waiting for their actual birthday to increase their age, it advances with the arrival of the Traditional Chinese New Year. This means that if a baby is born just one day before the New Year, they will be considered 2 years old only two days later, despite being just 2 days old in actual time.Age calculations can sometimes become confusing, particularly when dealing with months of varying lengths. For example, counting from February 20 to March 20 is straightforward—one month exactly. However, consider the scenario of February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022. One approach is to count from February 28 to March 28 as one month, with an additional 3 days afterward, yielding a result of one month and 3 days. Another approach treats February 28 and March 31 as the end of their respective months, making the result simply one month. Both methods are valid, and similar discrepancies arise in date ranges like April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30. These inconsistencies stem from the irregular distribution of days across months. In this calculator, we adopt the former method for consistency.
